US President Donald Trump said he is not signing the new housing-affordability bill until Congress passes the SAVE America Voting Act. The 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act had received bipartisan support, but remains stuck behind a logjam in the Senate over the SAVE voting bill. Trump said in a post to Truth Social that his signing of the housing bill is contingent on the Save America Act passing.
Trump Says Save America Act is Priority Over Housing Bill
It was not immediately clear whether he still plans to sign the housing bill or veto it. The White House did not release a statement to confirm Trump’s post on Truth Social on Wednesday morning. The president has previously withheld his support for legislation to increase pressure on lawmakers. Earlier this year, Mr. Trump threatened not to sign most other bills until Congress passes the SAVE America Act. Last week, Mr. Trump said he wouldn’t reauthorize a warrantless surveillance authority unless the elections bill were included.
“Today’s Housing News Conference and Signing is hereby cancelled until such time as we pass the desperately needed SAVE AMERICA ACT, which I consider to be a National Emergency,” he posted. Trump was set to sign the housing bill on Capitol Hill during a news conference. The Housing Act aimed to increase housing supply, make homes more affordable, and cap the amount of single-family homes private equity can purchase. Republican leaders in Congress announced that Trump would sign the bill in Statuary Hall on Wednesday at noon ET.

On the other hand, the SAVE America Act is meant to cut down on noncitizen voting in U.S. elections — which happens rarely and is already illegal in federal contests — and impose nationwide voter-ID laws. The House passed the SAVE America Act in February, and the measure is broadly popular among Republicans. But without Democratic support, the GOP is well short of the 60 votes needed to pass the legislation due to the Senate filibuster rule.
