Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that BRICS is jointly building an AI Alliance Network and a shared Cloud computing infrastructure to challenge the domination of the US and the West in the technological field. He announced the project at the AI Journey conference in Moscow, which was hosted by Sberbank, with key speakers being global industry leaders, government officials, and leading academic researchers.

The initiative is called the BRICS+ AI Alliance and aims to pool resources from member countries. This includes collaborative AI research, shared Cloud computing infrastructure, regulatory standards, and ethical frameworks. Russia has positioned itself as the primary co-ordinator of the project, despite India chairing the upcoming BRICS summit.

The goal of the BRICS+ AI Alliance is to compete with the US and the West in next-generation technology. The alliance is yet to lay out a concrete timeline for the formation of the project. However, the initiative will likely be largely discussed at the 18th BRICS summit this year in New Delhi. A foresight session could also be discussed in the meeting to further lay out a concrete plan.

Russia has also proposed a Code of AI Ethics during the conference and has received over 200 signatures from dignitaries. The Code of AI Ethics aims to promote unbiased and culturally sensitive algorithms, keeping in mind the diversity of the BRICS alliance. The model could be sustainable as countries like as Russia, China, and India are heavily invested in the AI sector.

BRICS member China is ahead in the race with DeepSeek AI looking to topple OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Google’s Gemini, and Anthropic’s Claude. The competition is intense, and the entry of the alliance could reshape the industry. Moreover, it would allow 11 countries to jointly build an AI infrastructure and Cloud computing enterprise.
